Environmental stewardship

Strategy and approach

PwC has made a worldwide science-based commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. This commitment includes supporting our clients to reduce their emissions as well as reducing those from the PwC network’s operations and suppliers. We are committed to decarbonise our operations, including our travel footprint, and neutralise our remaining climate impact by supporting carbon removal projects. We are also engaging our suppliers to tackle their climate impact.

Wherever possible, we embed environmental considerations to existing systems and processes to ensure our efforts are sustained over the longer term. Externally, we use our capabilities, knowledge and networks to raise awareness of environmental issues within the business community, bringing stakeholders together to collaborate on relevant topics. We are also committed to assisting our clients to move towards more environmentally sustainable business models, and use our independent voice to drive systemic change and cross-sector collaboration.

Net zero with 2030 goals

We commit to reducing our total greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in absolute terms by 2030, and investing in carbon removal projects to achieve net zero climate impact by 2030.

Our environmental impact

Energy management

As an office-based business, energy use in our operations contributes to a large portion of our total carbon footprint. Taking actions to drive energy efficiency is one of our top agenda items in reducing the environmental impact of our business.

In FY22, our absolute electricity consumption continued to decrease, and our electricity efficiency has improved by 45% per capita, compared to 10 years ago. We also continued to source I-REC Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) from accredited wind-power sources in China to cover all our scope 2 electricity consumption (including from air-conditioning).

Carbon management

As we work towards reducing our emissions by 50% including from owned vehicles, energy consumption and business travel, we continue to support high quality carbon offset projects. In FY22, PwC China supported two carbon offset projects in China and we will continue to counterbalance our emissions through high-quality carbon credits, transitioning our carbon offset portfolio to 100% carbon removals from FY30.

Waste and recycling

Although the amount of waste PwC generates is relatively small compared with other industries, it is still our responsibility to take actions to address our own waste footprint and work towards a circular economy. We maintain a number of recycling programmes to save precious resources from landfill, including plastic stationery, discarded laptops, coffee grounds and food waste at large events. In Hong Kong, we are running a pilot programme with V Cycle, a social enterprise that provides recycling solutions for corporates, to develop a more transparent and accountable recycling programme in our offices.

Awareness raising

A large part of our sustainability programme involves engaging our employees and raising awareness on environmental issues, inspiring individual behaviour change and facilitating meaningful interactions with the environment. Every year, we celebrate Green Week – a PwC campaign to raise awareness and engage our people in sustainability issues. In 2022, we launched the PwC Personal Carbon Calculator to help our people understand their carbon impacts and to engage them on low-carbon lifestyle changes.

To create a stronger culture of sustainability, we have been building up a voluntary network called PwC Green Team to harness the intrapreneurial spirit of PwC people in advancing sustainability. Green Team brings together a group of PwC people who are passionate about environmental sustainability and are interested to help improve our environmental impact and collaborate for a greener environment.
